How to Choose the Right PPE for Your Workplace
Share
Choosing the right personal protective equipment isn't just about ticking a compliance box — the wrong PPE can leave workers exposed to exactly the risks it's meant to prevent.
Start with the hazard, not the product. Before selecting PPE, identify what you're actually protecting against: chemical exposure, mechanical injury (cuts, abrasions), heat, or biological hazards. Each requires different material properties — nitrile gloves that protect against chemicals won't necessarily protect against punctures, for example.
Check the certification, not just the label. Look for relevant EN standards on any PPE you purchase — EN 374 for chemical-resistant gloves, EN 166 for eye protection, EN ISO 20471 for high-visibility clothing. These aren't arbitrary — they indicate the equipment has been tested against specific risk levels.
Fit matters as much as function. PPE that doesn't fit properly gets removed, adjusted mid-task, or simply doesn't perform as intended. Where possible, offer a range of sizes rather than a single default.
Review regularly, not just at onboarding. Workplace risks change as processes, materials, and equipment change. An annual PPE review — checking that what's supplied still matches actual site hazards — is good practice, not just good compliance.
